Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS,T)an agency of Aga Khan Development Network is one of the longest serving not-for-profit private health care institutions in Tanzania. It established its first health Dispensary in Dar es Salaam in 1929. Today, the AKHS,T offers quality health care through its world-class facilities, cutting edge technology and human resources.For example, the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam is the only hospital in Tanzania -- and one of the three hospitals in East Africa-- to receive the prestigious gold standard quality accreditation from Joint Commission International (JCI).

In 2018, the AKHS,T served over 600’000 patients through its high quality, internationally accredited, teaching Hospital in Dar es Salaam and 23 outreach and primary centres across the country. AKHS,T follows an integrated approach to health care that is based on a continuum of care ranging from primary and preventive health care to tertiary care. At each level of care, AKHS,T focuses on providing services that are needed by the community and on building linkages within the system. It also aims to ensure a quality of care that significantly raises local standards.

AKHS,T’s continued growth overnine decades is a strong testimony to the commitment of the institution to health care development in the country. Today, the AKHS,T facilities are known for their high level of ethical practices, innovation and provision of quality, safe and evidence-based care.

AKHS,T works closely with the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Childrenas a dialoguing and working partner and supports the Government’s health priorities in numerous ways.

The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam

A state-of-the-art teaching and tertiary care hospital

The Phase II expansion has transformed the Aga Khan Hospital from a 74-bed into a 170-bedtertiary care teaching hospital that offers the facilities to successfully provide advance clinical programmes in cardiology, oncology, neuro sciences, critical care (including neo-natal critical care) and maternal and child health all supported by relevant diagnostics, integrated operating rooms and a sophisticated accident and emergency department.

Phase II began in 2012, as part of the Hospital’s evolution, when AKHS,T embarked on a TZS 192 billion expansion. Financing was in the form of a 70% long term concessionary loan from AFD; 30% came as a grant from AKDN. Post-graduate medical education programmes (in collaboration with the Aga Khan University) have been established in all clinical and diagnostic specialties with the first batch of residents in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine graduating in 2019.

As part of the expansion, 35 outreach health facilities across Tanzania have been planned, 23 outreach centres are already operational. AKHS,T will spend TZS 2.7 billion ($1.2 million) in specialised training of health care professionals.
